One way to visualize data is Google's Ngram viewer. You can type words or phrases separated by a comma, and it will graph the appearance of these words in all of the books Google has put online by the years that you specify. Computer scientists and linguists at the University of Konstanz (Germany) have done research in the area of linguistic data analysis and visualization. Observing language change is a key component of the work this group has done.
An example of how visualizations of linguistic data could be used to analyze political communications is the VisArgue project mentioned in the above site.
